Experimental and clinical studies of effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on primary osteoporosis

Abstract:Objective To explore experimental and clinical results of acupuncture and moxibustion for the treatment of primary osteoporosis. Methods 65 female S. D. rats aged 12 months were randomly divided into 6 groups: normal control group, sham-cperated group, models group, estradiol group, acupuncture group, moxibustion group. Osteoporosis models were produced by bilateral ovariectomy. The treatment was carried out in models of 3 months and the treatment period lasted for 3 months. The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion was determined by the measurement of the biochemical indexes of bone metabolism, the level of sex hormone and bone morphometry. In the clinical tests,30 female cases of osteoporosis were randomly divided into two groups:acupuncture group and moxibustion group. Bone density of lumbar vertebral was determined at 3 months before treatment and after treatment. Results After the treatment, serum-AKP, Urine-Ca/Cr, UrineHOP/Cr in the estradiol group, acupuncture group and moxibustion group were significantly lower than in the model group;serum estradiol(E2), BGP in the estradiol group, acupuncture group and moxibustion group were significantly higher than those in the model group(p<0.05~0.01); the width ratio of bone trabecula to marrow cavity in the estradiol group, acupuncture group and moxibustion group was close to normal standard than that in the model group. Before and alter treatment,the bone density of 30 cases in the acupuncture group and moxibustion group raised 1.95% and 2.43% respectively. Conclusion There were no significant differents among the therapy of acupuncture, moxibustion and serum estradio. Acupuncture and moxibustion was effective way for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis.
