在科技论文中经常要采用外文字符进行表达，如量的符号、单位的符号、以及略语等常采用外文字符表达，例如，S大写正体是化学元素硫的符号，也是语法中subject主语的缩略语，必须根据具体语言环境作出正确判断，而s小写正体则是计量单位秒的符号，s小写斜体则是统计学符号，表示标准差. 由此可见，同一个字母表达不同的含义，这是由于大写、小写、正体、还是斜体来区别的. 因此，外文字符的大小写绝对不能马虎出错. 然而在医学杂志论文中经常能见到错误的表达，必须引起广大作者的注意. 为此，将常用的必须采用大写的情况综述如下.
